Loma Prieta Earthquake 35th Anniversary Compilation

By Communications and Publishing

September 19, 2024

On October 17, 1989, at 5:04 PM, a 6.9 magnitude earthquake hit near Loma Prieta, CA., shaking the San Francisco and Monterey Bay regions. The epicenter was near Loma Prieta peak, about 9 miles northeast of Santa Cruz and 60 miles southeast of San Francisco. Below are resources to understand the significance of this earthquake, the seismic hazards in the area, and how to prepare for future events.

Take Action!

This year’s International ShakeOut Day is on October 17th, the same day as the Loma Prieta earthquake that occurred in 1989. The best way to stay safe during an earthquake is knowing what to do when the ground starts shaking. Check out the resources below for ways to practice and prepare for an earthquake.

Retrospective Interviews

On October 17, 1989, at 5:04 pm a magnitude M6.9 earthquake struck near Loma Prieta, California. It was a tragic reminder of the destructive power of earthquakes. However, it was also a watershed moment in seismic research. 30 years later, we revisit the earthquake through the eyes of the scientists who experienced it. And studied it. These are their stories.

In Part 1, scientists reminisce about where they were when the earthquake first hit and what they saw happening around them in the moments after.

In Part 3, scientists discuss what impact the Loma Prieta earthquake had on seismic research, what they learned from experiencing it firsthand, and how society responded with emergency preparedness to the threat of future earthquakes.

In Part 4, scientists answer a simple question: “Are we safer today than in 1989?” Their answers may surprise you.
